Atom AE Starts Southern Counties with a Win!
The Tillsonburg Atom AE team was looking to make its mark on the Southern Counties League playoffs which began for them on Sunday evening against the Caledonia Thunder.
The Tornadoes came out strong in the first period, which the coaches were looking for after a nearly 3 week break in game action. They took they play to Caledonia, who were able to hold off the boys' due to the strong play of the Caledonia goalie.
As is the case so often in hockey, after spending the majority of the first period in the offensive zone, Caledonia took a 1-0 lead at 1:56 coming off a fast break.
Tillsonburg answered very quickly tying the game less than 40 seconds later at 1:18 (Roberts-unassisted).
The second period was fast and chippy (refs may have forgotten their whistles?) but produced no scoring.
Caledonia was alot more aggressive at the start of the 3rd and were rewarded when they took the lead at 10:35. But again the Tillsonburg boys replied quickly by scoring (Roberts-Fulkerson,Main) less than 25 seconds later to tie it up.
Tillsonburg really came together to close out the game with very strong, smart defensive play and some of the best puck moving passing of the season which lead to the game winning goal (Lee - Clarkson) with 4:19 remaining.
This was the first step for the boys towards the league Championship with a long road ahead, but with the boys' effort, dedicated parents and bench staff, great things can happen!
