Friendly Reminder - Respect in Sport

As we enter the second half of the season (and playoffs) the emotions can begin to run a little high in the stands, on the bench and on the ice.  A friendly reminder of TMHI's Mission Statement and Guiding Principles.
As an organization, we pride ourselves in ensuring that all stakeholders follow our mission and adhere to the Code of Conduct. As coaches, bench staff, volunteers, parents and grandparents of our organization, we hope you do your best to adhere to our Mission Statement, Guiding Principles and Code of Conduct...

It is all of our responsibility to behave in a fashion we expect our children and players to behave. As stakeholders, we lead by example. Please do your best to be a good leader.

TMHI Code of Conduct

Tillsonburg Minor Hockey Incorporated (TMHI) dedicates itself to the advancement of minor hockey for all individuals ensuring meaningful opportunities and positive experiences in a safe, sportsmanlike environment. The purpose of this document is to state clearly the expectations of parents and coaches for the season ahead.  As part of your registration, you have agreed to abide by the terms of the document below:

 

COACHES AND TEAM OFFICIALS WILL:

Be a resource person able to assist players to develop his/her potential

Ensure that all equipment and facilities meet current safety standards

Make the sport challenging and fun

Be honest and consistent with players

Be prepared to interact in a positive manner with administrators, league officials and parents

Be responsible people who are flexible and willing to continually learn and develop

Follow the advice of a medical exam when determining when an injured player is ready to play again

Recognize individual differences in players and always think of the player’s best interest. Aim for excellence based on realistic goals. The activity undertaken should be suitable for the age and ability of the players

Lead by example. Teach and practice cooperation, self-discipline, respect for officials and opponents and proper attitudes in language, dress and deportment. Rules are mutual agreements which no one should evade or break

Set and monitor boundaries between a working relationship and friendship with players. Team officials should realize that certain situations or friendly actions could be misinterpreted, not only by the player, but also by others motivated by jealousy, dislike or mistrust and could lead to allegations of misconduct or impropriety.

PARENTS WILL:

Not force an unwilling child to participate in sports

Encourage your child to always play by the rules

Teach your child that honest effort is more important than victory so that the result of each game is accepted without undue disappointment

Remember that children learn best by example. Applaud good plays by your team and by members of the opposing team

Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from children’s activities.

Not publicly question the official’s judgement and never question their honesty

Set an example by supporting and respecting your child’s coach. When problems arise, communicate on an individual basis. Public comments are not appropriate.

Recognize the value and importance of volunteer officials. They give their time and resources to provide recreational activities for your child

Refrain from coaching your child or any other players during games or practices unless you are one of the official coaches of the team. There is a zero tolerance policy on both verbal and non-verbal coaching unless you are an official coach of your child’s team

Turn defeat to victory by helping your child work toward skill improvement and good sportsmanship. Never ridicule, signal or yell at your child for making a mistake or losing a competition


Mobile and Internet policy

 

Members of TMHI (players, parents, coaches, team officials, board members) shall refrain from using any form of electronic communication to send or post content that is bullying, harassing, abusive or found to be conduct unbecoming (text, e-mail, social media, internet forums and blogs, etc).

 

OMHA CODE OF CONDUCT

This Code for Conduct identifies the standard of behaviour which is expected of all OMHA members and participants, which for the purpose of this policy shall include all players, guardians, parents, coaches, officials, volunteers, directors, officers, committee members, convenors, team managers, trainers, administrators and employees involved in OMHA activities and events.

OMHA is committed to providing an environment in which all individuals are treated with respect. Members and participants of OMHA shall conduct themselves at all times in a manner consistent with the values of OMHA which include fairness, integrity and mutual respect.

During the course of all OMHA activities and events, members shall avoid behaviour, which brings OMHA or the sport of hockey into disrepute, including but not limited to abusive use of alcohol, use of non-medical use of drugs and use of alcohol by minors.

OMHA members and participants shall at all times adhere to OMHA's operational policies and procedures, to rules and regulations governing OMHA events and activities, and to rules and regulations governing any competitions in which the member participates on behalf of OMHA.

Members and participants of OMHA shall not engage in any activity or behaviour which interferes with a competition or with any player or team's preparation for a competition, or which endangers the safety of others.

Members of OMHA shall refrain from comments or behaviours, which are disrespectful, offensive, abusive, racist or sexist. In particular, behaviour, which constitutes harassment or abuse will not be tolerated, and will be dealt with under OMHA"s Harassment Policy.

Failure to comply with this Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action in accordance with the Discipline Policy of OMHA. Such action may result in the member losing the privileges, which come with membership in OMHA, including the opportunity to participate in OMHA activities and events, both present and future.

 

OWHA CODE OF CONDUCT

This Code of Conduct identifies the standard of behaviour which is expected of all OWHA Members, including athletes, coaches, parents, directors, volunteers, staff, chaperones and others.OWHA Teams, Associations, Programmes and Leagues are committed to providing a sport environment in which all individuals are treated with respect. Members of the OWHA shall conduct themselves at all times in a fair and responsible manner. Members shall refrain from comments or behaviours which are disrespectful, offensive, abusive, racist or sexist. In particular, behaviour which constitutes harassment, abuse, bullying or cyber-bullying will not be tolerated by the OWHA.

During the course of all OWHA activities and events, members shall avoid behaviour which brings OWHA members or the sport of hockey into disrepute, including but not limited to abusive use of alcohol and non-medical use of drugs.

Members shall not use unlawful or unauthorized drugs/narcotics or performance enhancing drugs or methods.

Members of the OWHA shall not engage in activity or behaviour which endangers the safety of others.

OWHA members shall at all times adhere to the OWHA Team, Association, Programme and League operational policies and procedures, to rules governing the OWHA events and activities and to rules governing any competition in which the member participates on behalf of the OWHA.

Failure to comply with this Code of Conduct may result in disciplinary action, suspension or release from membership. Such action may result in the member losing the privileges that come with membership in the OWHA, including the opportunity to participate in OWHA activities.
